Avia. Biellese yarns since 1975
Interview with Margherita Palladino (Owner)
AVIA FILATI – An Italian textile company founded in 1975 and based in the Biella district, Avia Srl specializes in the production of classic and fancy yarns for needlework and weaving.
Avia is a customer of Datatex for the IT part.
Avia’s yarns are mid- to high-end products made in Italy from fine raw materials, from 100 percent wool to blends with mohair, alpaca and noble fibers, as well as linen, silk, cotton and man-made fibers. What are Avia’s flagship products and what kind of customers do you have?
For the needlework line (handmade balls), the customers are distributors who, under their own brand, resell to retail stores.
In the weaving line, the customers are the weaving mills of the big brands.
In both cases this is a demanding clientele, very attentive to product quality.
In the historical collections based on Avia’s products, there is the hand of Alberto Lattuada (1926 – 2014), an important Italian stylist and designer who until the 1990s contributed every year to create Fall/Winter and Spring/Summer collections made with Avia yarns. What remains today of this important collaboration and what other great partnerships has Avia been able to benefit from in its history? What are – more generally – the most stylistically interesting applications for your yarns?
A substantial historical archive remains of the collaboration, consisting of the sketches and garments made from the designs that, for each collection, the designer made for Avia. On the archive an important cataloguing work has been done in recent years.
The so-called Digital Product Passport (DPP), which will strictly regulate everything that has to do with the life cycle information of textile products, is coming soon in the European arena. How is Avia moving in this direction, namely with regard to traceability, eco-friendliness and product certifications?
Sustainability is a critically important issue in which we have long believed and invested. Our supply chain is fully traceable and we hold the most important product certifications.
We also adhere to the 4Sustainability® CHEM protocol, which allows us to monitor the use of chemicals along each stage of the production process.
What have been the difficulties that have most impacted the Italian and European textile sector in recent years, and what, on the other hand, are the elements of greater competitiveness and the levers to return to growth?
We have always invested in research and believe it is a key factor in competitiveness. We believe that the future will be played out on the issues of sustainability and customer service, which have long been priorities for us.
