Double interview with Paolo De Gobbi (Application Manager – Datatex) & Roberto Mazzola (IT Chief Technology Officer – Datatex)

Hello! How would you like to introduce yourself to the Datatex Magazine readers? Who are you? What are your passions and hobbies?

PAOLO DE GOBBI: I am Paolo De Gobbi, Application Manager at Datatex. My passions are travelling, sport and cooking.

ROBERTO MAZZOLA: I am Roberto and at Datatex I deal with the technological aspects of our solutions, in particular the stack related to our flagship ERP solution. This is a great passion of mine, in addition to travel and the financial world.

When did you start working at Datatex? What do you remember about when you started working with us and the first year?

PAOLO DE GOBBI: I started working at Datatex in September 2003. I have very good memories of my first year of work, right from the start I was very well received by everyone and even then, I was impressed by the internationality and the company’s great openness to global opportunities.

ROBERTO MAZZOLA: Many years have passed: I joined Datasys – a strategic partner of Datatex – in November 1990 and moved to Datatex in 2013. I remember my dilemma back in 1990: to go or not to go? Do I work in a bank or try this software house? I chose the IT world 32 years ago; I have never regretted it and I am still here today….

What do you most appreciate about your job and what are – in your opinion – the positive features and strengths of the Datatex world?

PAOLO DE GOBBI: What I like most about my job is the possibility of being able to deal – from the point of view of IT issues – with very heterogeneous industrial realities, along the entire chain of the textile world, from the yarn to the finished garment, in a context that always requires great creativity and problem-solving skills. The international structure of Datatex, which is present all over the world, also obliges me to constantly meet and compare myself with people of different backgrounds and cultures, and this is certainly a stimulating aspect of the job, which also enriches me on a personal level.

The strength of Datatex is the great know-how of the people. We all have very strong vertical expertise – and experience gained over the years – in relation to the specific problems of the textile world, we have always spoken the textile language, and this is certainly a fundamental added value for companies in the sector, who increasingly prefer us to generalist international software houses. Moreover, at Datatex, I greatly appreciate the autonomy that is granted – by the owners and managers – in carrying out their work, in a climate of trust that I believe is an essential value.

ROBERTO MAZZOLA: Certainly, Datatex is a company that has invested a great deal over the years in research and development, relying heavily on the Datatex laboratory in Milan, which among other things has created and consolidated NOW ERP, our proprietary ERP, which is now the world’s leading software solution in the textile world and is enhanced every year with new modules and further developments. At Datatex, there has always been considerable attention to the evolution of information technology and industrial processes, with continuous investment to keep abreast of the times, and this is probably our greatest strength, which has enabled us to withstand all the storms that have passed through an ever-changing world over the last thirty-five years and to always be competitive on the market. Finally, the added value of Datatex is the presence of an international but at the same time familiar and never impersonal working environment.

From a professional point of view, what has been the most important moment, and what has been the most significant result, that you have achieved since working at Datatex? Would you also like to tell us a curious or amusing anecdote about Datatex?

PAOLO DE GOBBI: Over the years, I have been given the opportunity to grow both professionally and personally, and seven years ago – in the Datatex laboratory in Milan – I was given greater responsibilities and took on a more important role.

ROBERTO MAZZOLA: Starting to look beyond the dear old 5250 brought a new ‘era’ for all of us and taking part in this ‘revolution’ was certainly very significant. Moreover, among the important professional achievements over the years, I cannot fail to mention the many projects carried out in partnership with IBM, but also the creation of ABSolution, a tool designed by our Datatex laboratory in Milan that allows us – quickly and on a tight budget – to analyse, translate, update, and modernise software and applications. The confidence of the management in believing that we would be able to create a tool like ABSolution was decisive in bringing forward a complex and very high-level project.

One anecdote, among many: they call me one evening when I had just left the office, informing me that there are problems with an important customer and that they have already booked a flight for the following morning to an Asian country, in a city I had never heard of. I arrive at the airport, check in, and the stewardess, seeing my final destination (I had a stopover), asks me “but where is it?”, and I thought “good start…”. I arrive at my destination that it’s night, there was supposed to be someone there to pick me up, but I don’t see anyone. Consider that I didn’t even know where to stay overnight, it had all been organised at the last minute. And who do you call at that hour? After a while luckily my driver arrives, who was late simply because he had accidentally fallen asleep in the car. I breathed a sigh of relief. Then in the following days I worked in a very interesting Asian textile company and had a very good time. But let’s say that the journey was not so easy….

Tell us a virtue and a defect of the colleague who is sharing this double interview with you, and tell us something about how you have collaborated and work together in the company (successes, clashes, discussions, debates)?

PAOLO DE GOBBI: If I think of Roberto, I can say that perhaps ‘diplomacy’ is not always his strong point, but unquestionably Roberto deserves recognition for his great professionalism and profound competence in the activities he performs, together with a rare ability to foresee future scenarios that are often difficult for everyone to glimpse at the beginning.

Our collaboration is daily; in the laboratory, application requirements are constantly intertwined with technical ones, and team spirit must always prevail in order to achieve the result.

ROBERTO MAZZOLA: There is no question about the professionalism and competence of Paolo, an application manager of great lucidity and experience. Too much availability is perhaps in some ways both a plus and a minus, but at work it is more often a plus.

Ciao! Come vuoi presentarti ai lettori del Datatex Magazine? Chi sei? Quali sono le tue passioni e i tuoi hobby?

PAOLO DE GOBBI: Sono Paolo De Gobbi, Application Manager di Datatex. Le mie passioni sono i viaggi, lo sport e la cucina.

ROBERTO MAZZOLA: Sono Roberto e in Datatex mi occupo degli aspetti tecnologici delle nostre soluzioni, in particolare dello stack legato alla nostra soluzione di punta ERP. Questa è una mia grande passione, oltre ai viaggi e al mondo finanziario.

Quando hai iniziato a lavorare in Datatex? Cosa ricordi di quando hai cominciato a lavorare con noi e del primo anno di lavoro?

PAOLO DE GOBBI: Ho iniziato a lavorare in Datatex nel settembre del 2003. Del primo anno di lavoro ho un ottimo ricordo, fin da subito sono stato accolto molto bene da tutti e mi avevano colpito già allora l’internazionalità e la grande apertura dell’azienda a opportunità globali.

ROBERTO MAZZOLA: Sono passati moltissimi anni: sono approdato in Datasys – partner strategico di Datatex – nel novembre del 1990, e sono passato in Datatex nel 2013. Ricordo il mio dilemma nel lontano 1990: vado o non vado? Lavoro in banca o provo con questa software house? Ho scelto 32 anni fa il mondo informatico, non mi sono mai pentito e oggi sono ancora qui…

Cosa apprezzi maggiormente del tuo lavoro e quali sono – secondo te – le caratteristiche positive e i punti di forza del mondo Datatex?

PAOLO DE GOBBI: Quello che mi piace del mio lavoro è la possibilità di potersi confrontare – dal punto di vista delle problematiche informatiche – con realtà industriali tra loro molto eterogenee, lungo tutta la filiera del mondo tessile, dal filato al capo finito, in un contesto che richiede sempre grande creatività e capacità di problem solving. La struttura internazionale di Datatex, che è presente in tutto il mondo, mi obbliga inoltre a incontri e confronti continui con persone diverse per formazione e cultura, e questo rappresenta sicuramente un aspetto stimolante del lavoro, che mi arricchisce anche sul piano personale.

Il punto di forza di Datatex è il grandissimo know how delle persone. Abbiamo tutti una competenza verticale molto forte – e un’esperienza maturata negli anni – rispetto alle problematiche specifiche del mondo tessile, parliamo da sempre il linguaggio tessile e questo è sicuramente un valore aggiunto fondamentale per le aziende del settore, che sempre più spesso preferiscono noi rispetto a software house internazionali generaliste. Inoltre, in Datatex, apprezzo molto l’autonomia che viene concessa – dalla proprietà e dai dirigenti – nello svolgimento della propria attività, in un clima di fiducia che secondo me è un valore imprescindibile.

ROBERTO MAZZOLA: Certamente Datatex è un’azienda che ha investito molto negli anni in ricerca e sviluppo, puntando molto sul laboratorio Datatex di Milano, che ha tra l’altro creato e consolidato NOW ERP, il nostro ERP proprietario, che è oggi la soluzione software leader mondiale nel mondo tessile e che è arricchita ogni anno con nuovi moduli e con ulteriori sviluppi. In Datatex c’è sempre stata un’attenzione notevole all’evoluzione delle tecnologie informatiche e dei processi industriali, con investimenti continui per essere sempre al passo con i tempi, e questo è probabilmente il maggiore punto di forza, che ci ha consentito di resistere a tutte le intemperie che hanno attraversato negli ultimi trentacinque anni un mondo in continua evoluzione e di poter essere sempre competitivi sul mercato. Aggiunto infine, come pregio di Datatex, la presenza di un ambiente di lavoro internazionale ma al tempo stesso familiare e mai impersonale.

Dal punto di vista professionale qual è stato il momento più importante, e quale il risultato più significativo, che hai raggiunto da quando lavori in Datatex? Vuoi raccontarci poi anche un aneddoto curioso o divertente riguardante la Datatex?

PAOLO DE GOBBI: Negli anni mi è stata data la possibilità di crescere sia dal punto di vista lavorativo che sul piano personale, e sette anni fa – nel laboratorio Datatex di Milano – mi sono state assegnate responsabilità maggiori e ho assunto un ruolo di maggior importanza.

ROBERTO MAZZOLA: L’iniziare a guardare oltre il vecchio e caro 5250 ha portato ai tempi una nuova “era” per tutti noi, e partecipare a questa “rivoluzione” è stato sicuramente molto significativo. Inoltre, tra i risultati professionali importanti raggiunti negli anni, non posso non citare i tanti progetti realizzati in partnership con IBM, ma anche la creazione di ABSolution, uno strumento ideato dal nostro laboratorio Datatex di Milano che consente – in tempi rapidi e con budget contenuti – di analizzare, tradurre, aggiornare e modernizzare software e applicazioni. La fiducia della direzione nel credere che saremmo riusciti a creare un tool come ABSolution è stata decisiva per portare avanti un progetto complesso e di altissimo livello.

Un aneddoto, tra i tanti: mi chiamano una sera che ero appena uscito dall’ufficio, mi avvertono che su un importante cliente ci sono dei problemi e che mi hanno già prenotato un volo per il mattino seguente per un Paese asiatico, in una città che non avevo mai sentito nominare. Arrivo in aeroporto, faccio il check-in e la hostess vedendo la destinazione finale (avevo uno scalo), mi chiede “ma dove si trova?”, e io ho pensato “iniziamo bene…”. Arrivo a destinazione che è notte, doveva esserci qualcuno a prendermi ma non vedo nessuno. Considera che non sapevo nemmeno dove pernottare, era stato tutto organizzato all’ultimo minuto. E chi chiami a quell’ora? Dopo un po’ per fortuna arriva il mio driver, che era in ritardo semplicemente perché per sbaglio si era addormentato in macchina. Ho tirato un sospiro di sollievo. Poi nei giorni seguenti ho lavorato in un’azienda tessile asiatica molto interessante e mi sono trovato molto bene. Ma diciamo che il viaggio non è stato semplicissimo…

Dicci un pregio e un difetto del /della collega che sta condividendo con te questa intervista doppia e raccontaci qualcosa su come avete collaborato e collaborate in azienda (successi, scontri, discussioni, dibattiti)?

PAOLO DE GOBBI: Se penso a Roberto posso dire che forse la “diplomazia” non è sempre il suo forte, ma indiscutibilmente a Roberto vanno riconosciute una grandissima professionalità e una profonda competenza nelle attività che svolge, unitamente a una rara capacità di prevedere degli scenari futuri che spesso all’inizio è arduo per tutti intravedere.

La collaborazione tra noi è quotidiana, in laboratorio le esigenze applicative si intrecciano continuamente a quelle tecniche e deve sempre prevalere lo spirito di squadra in vista del raggiungimento del risultato.

ROBERTO MAZZOLA: Sulla professionalità e sulla competenza di Paolo, Application Manager di grande lucidità ed esperienza, non si discute. La troppa disponibilità è forse per certi versi sia il pregio che il difetto, ma sul lavoro è più spesso un pregio.
