Double interview with Gaetano Tonello (Datatex Italy Senior Project Manager) & Patrizio Perego (Datatex Italy Senior Project Manager)

GAETANO TONELLO: My name is Gaetano Tonello, I am 56 years old, married with four children and a grandson. My main hobby is cycling, but I also like chess, table tennis and walking in the mountains. My role at Datatex is Project Manager.

PATRIZIO PEREGO: My name is Patrizio Perego and I am also a Project Manager at Datatex. My passions are fishing (especially salmon fishing in Canada when I can), running, hiking in the mountains and theatre.

When did you start working for Datatex? What do you remember about when you started working with us and your first year?

GAETANO TONELLO: I started working for Datatex in 1987. At that time, I was a very young programmer in my early twenties who came in through the back door with soft steps. But I immediately found myself on a fast train, in a company that was working on the new TIM management system (the forerunner of today’s NOW ERP) and that was carrying out important projects in Italy (for example, at Frette and Set, now part of the Imprima Group), in Portugal, in Turkey and in several other countries around the world. I had the pleasant feeling of learning something new every day.

PATRIZIO PEREGO: I started working at Datasys – a strategic partner of Datatex – in 1985 as an RPG programmer on System 38 (later to become AS/400 in 1990) and moved to Datatex in 1987. I had the opportunity to take part in the development of the MAIS project (which later became the TIM Cost Module), working from the outset in an international context and in close contact with the owners, in particular Ronnie Hagin, the current CEO of Datatex.

What do you like most about your job and what do you consider to be the positive features and strengths of Datatex world?

GAETANO TONELLO: In my job you face new challenges every day, every day is a leap in the dark because a project manager never knows what to expect and what difficulties may arise from time to time. The truth is that it is impossible to plan activities in detail and that it is necessary to be extremely flexible and ready to solve problems. This is the beauty of my job, together with the opportunity to get in touch with very interesting companies and people, both in Italy and all over the world (for example, I have carried out several important projects in Bangladesh, sometimes even spending several months there).

In my opinion, Datatex has two main strengths: the great tradition and enormous experience accumulated in forty years of IT work for the textile world; and the solidity of the team, a formidable team of technicians in which no one is left alone.

PATRIZIO PEREGO: I like following up with customers, dealing with new problems and getting to know companies and people.

The strength of Datatex is the value of the group, a very tight-knit team where different skills complement each other. It is impossible for a single technician to know everything, but everyone who works at Datatex knows that they can always count on others and that there is always someone who can solve any problem.

From a professional point of view, what has been the most important moment and result you have achieved since working at Datatex? Would you also like to tell us a curious or amusing anecdote about Datatex?

GAETANO TONELLO: I’ve been working at Datatex for thirty-six years and there have been many professional successes that I’ve shared with my colleagues. However, the ones we like to remember the most are the ones where we have “suffered” the most, the most difficult challenges that seemed impossible at the time and that we managed to overcome at the end. I am thinking, for example, of the work we did for a major Swiss manufacturer in 2003. We had made commitments, we had to deliver, but we had only 90 days to go live, we were way behind schedule, mainly because of the extreme complexity of the requirements. I led a dedicated team of nine people; we did the impossible to meet our commitments and we did it.

The most enjoyable moment was in Spain, in 2001, when Patrizio Perego and I were in Barcelona – together with our colleague Vincenzo Batti, now retired – following a Datatex project in a large Spanish textile company. It was summer, Barcelona is a fantastic city and, in the evenings, – after work – we would go out for dinner and a stroll. One night we went into a bar and Vincenzo – who had never tried it – said ‘let’s try this piña colada’. He drank three, he wasn’t used to it, and on the way back to the hotel he was tipsy and said some incredible things. Patrizio and I were laughing our heads off, and I can say that I understood exactly what laughing our heads off meant at that moment.

PATRIZIO PEREGO: The most important moment for me was in 2002, when the big Datatex project for the Benetton Group, a fascinating project and a tough challenge that involved the whole of Olimpias, Benetton’s textile manufacturing arm, with ten factories involved. Gaetano and I managed ten technicians for the occasion and for years I was practically ‘at home’ in Ponzano Veneto, the headquarters of the Benetton Group. We all did a great job and it was a really good time.

Some funny memories are linked to the time in 2006 when Gaetano and I followed an important textile project in Bangladesh. It was a wonderful experience, but there was always a certain fear on my part when we went out into nature and to the most remote places in the country: I was always afraid of being bitten by mosquitoes or having some unforeseen health problem, but in reality, we always had a good time.

Give us a plus and a minus about the colleague who is sharing this double interview with you and tell us something about how you have worked together and collaborated in the company (successes, clashes, discussions, debates)?

GAETANO TONELLO: Patrizio is a generous, scrupulous, and tenacious person. I can’t really find any faults with him. Of course, I would like him to be happier, to smile more, but he has this character, and it is not a defect but a way of being.

PATRIZIO PEREGO: Gaetano is hard headed, he always wants to be right. We have had many existential, political or religious discussions over the years and at the end – one way or another – you have to tell him ‘you are right’, otherwise he is not happy. But he has great qualities: he never gives up, he is always looking for an answer or a solution, even when faced with seemingly impossible questions and requests, and he is always willing to lend a hand. I remember, for example, when I called him years ago when I was in a textile company in Colombia and I didn’t understand how to solve a problem, it was after midnight in Italy, he answered me immediately and ‘saved’ me by giving me the right suggestions to solve the problem.

Ciao! Come vuoi presentarti ai lettori del Datatex Magazine? Chi sei? Quali sono le tue passioni e i tuoi hobby?

GAETANO TONELLO: Sono Gaetano Tonello, ho 56 anni, sono sposato e ho quattro figli e un nipote. Il mio grande hobby è la bicicletta, ma amo molto anche gli scacchi, il ping pong e le passeggiate in montagna. In Datatex ricopro il ruolo di Capo Progetto.

PATRIZIO PEREGO: Sono Patrizio Perego e sono anch’io Capo Progetto in Datatex. Le mie passioni sono la pesca (in particolare, quando riesco, la pesca dei salmoni in Canada), la corsa, le escursioni in montagna e il teatro.

Quando hai iniziato a lavorare in Datatex? Cosa ricordi di quando hai cominciato a lavorare con noi e del primo anno di lavoro?

GAETANO TONELLO: Ho iniziato a lavorare in Datatex nel 1987. Ero ai tempi un giovanissimo programmatore ventenne, entrato in azienda dalla porta secondaria a passi felpati. Ma mi sono ritrovato fin da subito su un treno in corsa, in un’azienda che stava lavorando sul nuovo sistema gestionale TIM (antesignano dell’attuale NOW ERP) e che stava portando avanti progetti importanti in Italia (per esempio in Frette e in Set, oggi parte del Gruppo Imprima), in Portogallo, in Turchia e in diversi altri Paesi nel mondo. Avevo ogni giorno la piacevole sensazione di imparare qualcosa di nuovo.

PATRIZIO PEREGO: Ho iniziato a lavorare in Datasys – partner strategico di Datatex – nel 1985, come programmatore Rpg sul Sistema 38 (poi diventato AS/400 nel 1990), e sono passato in Datatex nel 1987. Ho avuto la possibilità di partecipare allo sviluppo del progetto Mais (poi diventato il Modulo Costi di TIM), lavorando fin da subito in un contesto internazionale e a stretto contatto con la proprietà, in particolare con Ronnie Hagin, l’attuale CEO di Datatex.

Cosa apprezzi maggiormente del tuo lavoro e quali sono – secondo te – le caratteristiche positive e i punti di forza del mondo Datatex?

GAETANO TONELLO: Nel mio lavoro ci si trova quotidianamente di fronte a nuove sfide, ogni giorno è un salto nel buio perché un Capo Progetto non sa mai cosa lo aspetta e quali difficoltà da affrontare si possono presentare di volta in volta. La verità è che è impossibile programmare le attività nel dettaglio e che è necessario avere estrema flessibilità e grande prontezza nel risolvere i problemi. Questo è il bello del mio lavoro, unitamente alla possibilità di entrare in contatto con aziende e con persone molto interessanti, in Italia e nel mondo (io per esempio ho portato avanti diversi progetti importanti in Bangladesh, in alcuni casi fermandomi anche per diversi mesi in quel Paese).

Datatex ha secondo me due principali punti di forza: la grande tradizione e l’enorme esperienza accumulata in quarant’anni di attività informatiche per il mondo tessile; la solidità della squadra, un team formidabile di tecnici nel quale nessuno viene mai abbandonato a se stesso.

PATRIZIO PEREGO: Mi piace seguire i clienti, affrontare problematiche sempre nuove e conoscere aziende e persone.

Il punto di forza di Datatex è il valore del gruppo, un team molto affiatato e nel quale le diverse competenze si completano a vicenda. Per un singolo tecnico è impossibile sapere tutto, ma quello che ogni persona che lavora in Datatex sa perfettamente è che può sempre contare sugli altri e che c’è sempre qualcuno in grado di risolvere qualunque problema.

Dal punto di vista professionale qual è stato il momento più importante, e quale il risultato più significativo, che hai raggiunto da quando lavori in Datatex? Vuoi raccontarci poi anche un aneddoto curioso o divertente riguardante la Datatex?

GAETANO TONELLO: Sono trentasei anni che lavoro in Datatex e di successi professionali – condivisi con i miei colleghi – ce ne sono stati tantissimi. Ma ci piace ricordare soprattutto i successi più “sofferti”, le sfide più difficili che al momento sembravano impossibili e che alla fine siamo riusciti a vincere. Penso per esempio al lavoro fatto per un’importante industria svizzera nel 2003. Avevamo preso degli impegni, dovevamo assolutamente rispettarli ma ci restavano soltanto 90 giorni prima del Go Live ed eravamo molto indietro, anche per via dell’estrema complessità delle richieste. Ero alla guida di un team dedicato con nove persone, abbiamo fatto l’impossibile per mantenere gli impegni presi e ce l’abbiamo fatta.

Il momento più divertente è stato in Spagna, nel 2001, quando io e Patrizio Perego eravamo a Barcellona – insieme al nostro collega Vincenzo Batti, oggi in pensione – per seguire un progetto di Datatex in un’importante azienda tessile spagnola. Era estate, Barcellona è una città fantastica e la sera – dopo il lavoro – si usciva per cenare e per fare quattro passi. Una sera siamo entrati in un bar e Vincenzo – che non l’aveva mai provata – ha detto “proviamo questa Piña colada”. Ne ha bevute tre, non era abituato e mentre tornavamo in albergo era veramente brillo e diceva delle cose incredibili. Io e Patrizio morivamo dal ridere, e anzi posso dire di aver capito proprio in quella occasione cosa significa veramente “morire dal ridere”.

PATRIZIO PEREGO: Il momento più importante per me è stato nel 2002, in occasione del grande progetto di Datatex per il Gruppo Benetton, un progetto affascinante e una sfida impegnativa, che riguardava l’intera Olimpias, la manifattura di Benetton, con dieci stabilimenti coinvolti. Io e Gaetano gestivamo per l’occasione dieci tecnici e per anni sono stato praticamente “di casa” a Ponzano Veneto, la sede centrale del Gruppo Benetton. Abbiamo fatto tutti un ottimo lavoro ed è stato davvero un bel periodo.

Alcuni ricordi divertenti sono legati al periodo in cui io e Gaetano stavamo seguendo – nel 2006 – un progetto tessile importante in Bangladesh. È stata una bellissima esperienza ma c’era sempre da parte mia un certo timore quando andavamo a fare delle gite nella natura e nei luoghi più isolati del Paese: avevo sempre paura di essere punto dalle zanzare o di poter avere qualche problema di salute imprevedibile, ma in realtà siamo sempre stati bene.

Dicci un pregio e un difetto del /della collega che sta condividendo con te questa intervista doppia e raccontaci qualcosa su come avete collaborato e collaborate in azienda (successi, scontri, discussioni, dibattiti)?

GAETANO TONELLO: Patrizio è una persona generosa, scrupolosa e tenace. Non trovo dei veri e propri difetti in lui. Certamente mi piacerebbe vederlo più contento, più sorridente, ma lui ha questo carattere e non è un difetto ma un modo di essere.

PATRIZIO PEREGO: Gaetano è una testa dura, vuole sempre avere ragione. Di discussioni esistenziali, politiche o religiose ne abbiamo fatte tante in questi anni e alla fine – in un modo o nell’altro – bisogna dirgli “hai ragione”, altrimenti non è contento. Ma ha dei grandi pregi: non si arrende mai, cerca sempre una risposta o una soluzione anche di fronte a domande e richieste apparentemente impossibili ed è sempre disponibile a dare una mano. Ricordo per esempio quando – anni fa – l’ho chiamato mentre mi trovavo in un’azienda tessile in Colombia e non capivo come risolvere un problema, in Italia era passata la mezzanotte, lui mi ha risposto subito e mi ha “salvato” dandomi i suggerimenti giusti per risolvere il problema.
